Ridgeland is located between Jasper and Beaufort countries in South Carolina. It was initially known as Gopher Hill back in 1984. The name “Gopher Hill” was derived from the gopher tortoise, which is native to the area. It was later considered unfit for a new railroad station, and due to this reason, it changed to Ridgeland in 1902. The name Ridgeland comes across because the town is on a sandy ridge that is the most significant land in Jasper county.

Ridgeland is known as Ridgeland Correctional Institution’s home, with a security prison that’s operated by South Carolina Correction department.
