A good number of people can find it hard pronouncing Okatie correctly, for that reason, and if you happen to be one of them, the correct pronunciation is “OH-Kuh-tee.”

This area in South Carolina is named after a nearby river known as the Okatee River, an estuary of the Port Royal Sound. Okatie is an unincorporated suburban community west of Hilton Head Island, located in Beaufort and Jasper counties, in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority has its headquarters situated in Okatie. John Paul II Catholic High School and Beaufort-Jasper Academy for Career Excellence are also in that area.

Okatie stretches from south central Jasper County to western Beaufort County. In 1961, the General Assembly of the Carolina State designated the place as a voting precinct. Some parts of Okatie have been annexed by Hardeeville, Bluffton, and Port Royal. The route that is generally considered the main route through the place is South Carolina Highway 170, also referred to as Okatie Highway.

Since the 1990s, Okatie has experienced significantly low residential development density, Riverbend, Sun City Hilton Head, and Oldfield. The problem is also in commercial and industrial development areas, mainly in the Jasper County sections of Okatie. This development pattern has raised concerns over the quality of water and wildlife’s fate due to the loss of forest habitat for them.

Many efforts are made to incorporate the community, but none has yielded any results; one of the reasons is the conflicting opinions regarding the future of growth and development in the area. Despite the challenges Okatie has been facing for decades, the place has a lot to boast for in the long run. For one, Okatie is one of the safest growing estates in the United States. Compared to other cities, towns, and villages, the crime rate is estimated to be 64% lower. According to FBI crime data analysis, when you compare to other South Carolina communities, the crime rate is 88% lower in Okatie.

Apart from security, let’s take a look at Beaufort, South Carolina (mostly referred to as the Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands); this place offers a perfect escape for the people who want to escape the world and enjoy some quality time with friends or family. The estate provides a coastal calm that appeals to not only the visitors but the locals as well. Given that it is one of the safest places in the country, peace of mind is guaranteed.

There are many sights to behold in Okatie, so if you plan a vacation but are unsure where you should visit, perhaps you should try the place. There are many interesting activities you can do here. The hotels here have authentic cuisine, too.
